Sara SHIELDS
Born in Richmond Hill and raised in Aurora, Ontario, Shields moved to Toronto in her early twenties to pursue her arts education, and graduated from the Centennial College Fine Arts Studio Program in 2010.
Through thoughtful revision and experimentation, Shields has developed a style that is uniquely hers. In pastels and coloured pencil, she creates drawings that tell a story of otherworldly characters and the imaginary landscapes in which they find themselves.
Specializing primarily in works on paper, Shields’ most recent pastel figure drawings seek to reclaim the feminine form from societal stereotypes and expectations. Through her imaginary creatures, she shines a light on what is found in between conscious moments in the arena of relatable human experience and emotion. She presents the inherent beauty of imperfection, intricately delineating the pathways to inner and outward healing. She presents it not in the context of an externally judged “beginning” or “ending” point, but in an eternal present, which is the moment being experienced by the viewer, a timeless middle-ground typically ignored in our polarized society.
Since graduating, Shields has exhibited in various solo shows, group shows, and art fairs. Her drawings have been acquired by private library and head office collections, as well as purchased by clients located around the world. Her drawings have also been available through the Art Gallery of Ontario's Art Sales & Rental Program.
“I value togetherness and community – something that is especially needed today. My drawings showcase the in-between moments found within life until death, moments we might otherwise take for granted. I offer snapshots of an eternal present, the moment being experienced by the viewer, who may find their own story of triumph, perseverance, and hope therein.”
